July 23rd WriteOn

The SciFi geek that I am, I have to share a video that Suzie Townsend posted on her blog–too funny. Darth Vader and Stormtroopers Dance to Michael Jackson.

Yay, it’s Friday. I’m posting while watching Starz’s Pillars of the Earth miniseries. I loved the book, but will the movie hold up? Hmm.

I’d like to start out my weekly wrap-up by congratulating Maggie Stiefvater on her success of Linger. If you want to read what it’s like to debut on the New York Bestseller’s list for the first time, check out her post.

This week’s WriteOn Awards, I want to add a thank you to Nomar from Knight Chills and his post about this blog on his site. Thanks so much. :-)  Without further ado, the WriteOn Award goes to three lovely ladies who have a way with words…

The site Lethal Inheritance follows Tahlia Newland on her road to publication. This week she offered some helpful advice on how to deal with rejection and the first chapter of her novel is a great read.

Author Melissa Webb shares some of her work, including some of her flash fiction pieces on her site, Ramblings of a Word Weaver. Check out this week’s flash fiction–”Some Dance to Remember.”

On Just Me and My Words, Miss Ali posts on everything from charities to teasers of her own writing. Her latest post on what makes a piece of literature (or a movie) timeless was thought-provoking and gave me something to chew on as the beginning of a new school year approaches.

WriteOn Awards–July 9

The end of the second week of July–eek! That can’t be, but yes, I have to admit that my days solely writing (and playing with my kiddos) are numbered as I’m on the other side of the hump. School starts in four weeks people. Okay, enough unnecessary stressing on onto my favorite blogs of the week.

My first WriteOn Award goes to the site Restless Writers managed by a trio of talented ladies, Maria McDonald, Lori Dyan, and Bjas (Beckie). I loved Beckie’s post on “37 Videos for Writers.” There is a wealth of information here for aspiring writers so go and check it out.

L.M. Lawrence also gets a WriteOn Award because of her posts this week on the writing process and relating it to CAKE–yum. Both “Writing in Layers” and “Editing in Layers” list some helpful tips as well as make my mouth water.

I have to give another WriteOn Award to Heather’s Odyssey for calling me on my lazy writing with her post on “Making Your Character Their Own Person.” Sometimes when I’m writing, I slip into the–what would I do in this situation–and Heather reminded me that even though it’s my world, it’s not all about me, but my characters–thanks.

My last, but certainly not least, WriteOn Award goes to Jennifer Hubbard’s blog, WriterJenn for her post of setting. She reminded me that as much as I focus on my characters, I can’t forget that setting is important too. And because of her posts, I’ve added The Secret Year to my Goodreads list.

July 2 Friday Blog Picks

Hey everyone, it’s late here, so this is going to be a short post. I wanted to give a shout out to some cool blogs I’ve been following this week. After my lucky streak yesterday, I thought I pass it along–hence the brand new WriteOn Award, created by yours truly to honor some marvelous words of wisdom this past week.

****************************************************************

Sometimes Nonsense of a YA Writer, Reader and Mom by Rebecca Sutton–Because of her great coverage of the ALA coverage, I went from, “ALA?” to excited to try and make the next one. Loved the detailed descriptions, the pictures and the general explanation of the experience.

Knight Chills by Nomar Knight. Where else can I get my daily dose of the creeps? Knight does a fantastic job of pulling people into the bizarre and keeping them on the edge until the end. Loved his flash fiction this week–flies are freaky, especially when they won’t leave something hidden alone.

The Write Words by Lindsey Edwards. She allowed me to vicariously vacation with her on a beautiful lake. Not only did I enjoy the scenery and the shared feelings of a fellow writer, but she also has some pretty useful resource links.

Shrinking Violet Promotions: Marketing for Introverts. While I’m not published now, some day I will be. That sounds incredibly vain, but I also know it won’t happen unless I believe it will.  Philosophy aside, this site is a great resource for fellow introverts who would rather hang out in their own imaginary worlds than speak in front a crowd (even if it’s only five people).  They offer, not only marketing tips, but general writing advice.
